first scholastic chess nationals in San Jose at the Doubletree Hotel onApril 29 and 30.
In the kindergarten and first grade division, Weibel, Mission San Jose and Chadborne elementary schools tied for third place: In the primary school junior varsity Division (kindergarten through third grade), Weibel placed second and Mission San Jose third in the school section. The local Wisdom Chess Club took a second in the club section. In the primary school championship division, Weibel won first place in the team section.
In the elementary junior varsity Division (grades fourth through sixth), Mission San Jose took fourth. The elementtary championships were won by Weibel. Wisdom Chess Club placed fifth.
In the junior high championships, Hopkins Junior High took a second place. Mission San Jose High School took a third place in the High School championships. Jocelyn Lee of Fremont, a Weibel graduate who attends the Chinese Christian School in San Leandro, tied for fourth.
Also, the Chess Education' Association named Alan Kirshner, an Ohlone College, professor of history, as their, chess coach of the year. He has been chess coach of the Weibel team for 11 years. This year he began the Wisdom Chess Club at the Wisdom Chinese Cultural Center. He organized the Calfornia Chess State Scholastic Championships that drew 985 players.
